Amino acids are elementary building blocks of proteins - the key ingredients for life as we know it. It is, therefore, only natural that they represent key components of countless bioactive compounds and drugs that govern the contemporary trends in pharmaceutical industry. Moreover, abundance of free amino acids in specific organs, especially the “unnatural” D-amino acids serves as a biomarker of severe generation diseases, e.g., Alzheimer disease, brain ischemia and dementia amongst others. However, detection and quantification of free amino acids, especially in low abundance, is considerably troublesome. Standard UV-Vis detection is often unfeasible due to lack of a proper chromophore. MS detection suffers from limited ionisation of these species. Thus, an appropriate derivatization is required prior to the analysis itself.
